Chip Seal in Texas

Chip seal driveways and roads in Texas have been around decades before traditional asphalt. All throughout Texas many of the roads, driveways, and parking lots believe it or not are chip seal and not asphalt. Hot asphalt definitely has its place but if you are trying to get a paved surface on a budget chip seal might be the way to go.

Chip Seal Process

Chip seal over over Asphalt: Chip seal is often installed over an asphalt surface to extend the life of the asphalt by creating a wear layer. Let the chip seal wear out and not the asphalt. Once a paved surface has been bought and paid for it makes sense to protect your investment by creating a wear layer. Its far less expensive to add another layer of chip seal than a layer of asphalt.

Chip seal over gravel: If you have a dusty gravel road and are looking to have a nice driveway, consider a chip seal driveway. Chip seal over gravel should always be done using two layers of chip seal. One layer of chip seal in most cases will not hold up. A lot of chip seal companies will tell you one layer is good enough over gravel but it is not. Get your driveway graded out making sure all of the large rock/stones are pushed off to the side or incorporated into the grading process. Large rock will stick up through your new chip seal and be ugly.

Why Chip Seal Over Gravel or Asphalt?

  • For Gravel:
    • Dust Control: Gravel surfaces can be dusty, which affects air quality and visibility. Chip sealing encapsulates the gravel and covers it with a hard driving surface, minimizing dust.
    • Stability: It prevents the gravel from shifting under traffic, reducing the formation of ruts and potholes.
    • Weather Protection: Gravel roads are prone to erosion and washouts, but chip sealing creates a barrier against Texas’s intense weather conditions.
  • For Asphalt:
    • Extended Lifespan: If your asphalt is showing signs of wear but isn’t ready for a full replacement, chip sealing can add years to its life.
    • Surface Renewal: It rejuvenates old, faded asphalt, improving both appearance and functionality.
    • Cost Efficiency: Chip sealing over existing asphalt is a more economical alternative to full resurfacing or reconstruction.

Our Chip Sealing Process

  • Assessment: We evaluate whether your base (gravel or asphalt) is suitable for chip sealing, ensuring optimal adhesion and longevity.
  • Preparation:
    • Gravel: We grade the surface to create a smooth, even base.
    • Asphalt: We clean and repair any significant cracks or potholes to ensure a good bond.
  • Application:
    • An asphalt emulsion is sprayed over the surface, followed by the spreading of aggregate (chips). This is then rolled to embed the chips into the emulsion.
  • Curing: Allowing time for the emulsion to set, ensuring a strong bond between the chips and the base layer.
  • Sealing: Optionally, we apply an additional seal coat for extra durability, particularly in high-traffic areas or where weather conditions are more severe.

Tailored to Texas’s Diverse Climates

  • East Texas: Here, we focus on moisture resistance due to high humidity and frequent rain.
  • West Texas: Emphasizing dust control and thermal resistance in the arid climate.
  • Central Texas: Balancing between wet and dry conditions, ensuring versatility.
  • North Texas: Providing flexibility for temperature fluctuations and occasional winter conditions.
  • South Texas: Fortifying against coastal influences like salt corrosion.
